Victoria’s Garden

While up in Vermont during the pandemic I was approached because of being known for plein air painting to see if I could do some art classes for some girls. The girls normally go to camp together but because of covid camp was suspended so one of the girls’ moms was creating safe opportunities. I contacted my painting buddy, Adrien and together we decided to do the camp day for the girls at Greater Barton Arts. We practiced social distancing art instruction, The girls were very motivated and produced some very nice artwork.

Last year when I was in Vermont, Plein Air NEK, the group I started in 2014 to find plein air painters up here, worked with the Orleans County Conservation District (OCCD) to put together an exhibit on Conserved Farms titled “Farming: The Art of Stewardship“. I arranged with the help of the OCCD to paint with my group at four different farms that practice conservation on the farms. What a great opportunity and lots of fun.

The exhibit had the opening at the East Side restaurant in Newport, VT, and later traveled to North County High School and finally, just recently, to Greater Barton Arts Center in Barton, VT.

This week there was an opening of the exhibit hosted at Great Barton Arts. A selection of the paintings completed for the exhibit are on display as well as lots of educational information about the farms and the conservation practices. The reception was well attended and PA-NEK is honored to be the first exhibit that GBA is hosting. Unfortunately, it is displayed sandwiched between a old recycled exhibit from 1983 of photography about one room school houses. While more could have been presented in the opening remarks about the conservation on Vermont farms and the art of plein air painting, the reception was more of an excuse to promote GBA and their hopes and dreams.

This summer PA-NEK is working again with the Conservation District as well as Old Stone House, Lavender Essentials and Wonder Arts so stay tuned for some amazing plein air art coming.

preliminary sketch of buildings in Old Havana

John and I went on a cruise that had an overnight in Havana Cuba. It was a great trip and was wonderful to visit Old Havana although it is sad to see such urban decay in some otherwise beautiful buildings. I did bring all my sketching supplies with the intent of documenting my travels. I did some practice sketches of buildings before going and studio painting of the same buildings upon returning home.

I did take lots of photos for reference for future painting. And I did do some plein air painting of the NCL private island , Great Stirrup Cay, from the balcony of our stateroom .

Additionally, I did some “plein lazy” painting by projecting a nocturnal image of Basilica Menor de San Francisco de Asis onto the TV set in the state room from my cell phone. It was great to paint in comfort on an “at sea day”, and my arthritic joints appreciated the “plein lazy” approach.

I’ve always wanted to go to Tuscany and this summer I will get the chance. John and I will spend three days in Florence and then visit Barga Italy in northeast Tuscany. I have romantic notions of John and I visiting the birthplace of the renaissance, eating Tuscan food and drinking Tuscan wine.

After three days in Florence we will drive northeast to Barga, a medieval town that is an artist colony. There the plan is to enjoy the Tuscan life while painting the beautiful landscape known for it’s magnificent light. I have a friend who I know from Naked Wines who has invited us to stay with her for a bit. I want to paint her a painting as a gift so I started to get int the mod by painting the above painting of Barga with the Alps as the backdrop. Since ‘light was the star’ I decided to use the painting the light method of the Cape Cod School of Art as described by Lois Griffel in her book “Painting the Impressionist Landscape”

This has certainly peaked my interest about the trip and am looking forward to it even more.
